Urban transformation in Turkey has gained speed in the 2000's. The stated goal is to protect the historic and cultural heritage sites in urban areas. However, Tokludede, an old Ottoman neighborhood in the heart of the historic center of Istanbul is only one of 50 neighborhoods under threat of demolition. Since it was declared a renewal area the residents were forced to leave their neighborhood while some still resist.

In 2006, Sulukule neighborhood whose population was mostly Gypsy, became a victim of urban transformation. The houses were unlawfully demolished and the inhabitants were forced to purchase TOKI's "social houses" 40 km outside the city. Almost none of the residents could pay the installments and soon they returned to their old neighborhood, but under much poorer conditions. Today luxury villas for the rich rise in place of the 1000-year old neighborhood. So who profited from this transformation?
